V. Olson : g West Vancouver r home free witha double header J ‘OFFER ENDS Ife a AUGUST 31°! ft? 9-1-1 allegations are way off-hase Dear Editor: J read K. Deans’ July 23 News letter to the cditor entitled “Questioning 9-1-1 priorities” in which the writer states that a 9- 1-1 operator “over-ruled™ his request to be transferred to the fire department in order to report an car accident. A glaring error in K. Deans statement needs to be corrected, Believing this person’s opinion that calling a fire service before calling the paramedic’s is going to benefit a sick or injured party is a foolhardy statement at best, irresponsible at worst. The writer's statement that “9-1-1 operators dispatch motor vehicle accidents first to B.C. ambulance service and second to the fire department” is wrong, 9-1-1 operators only ask one question when you dial: “Police, fire or ambulance?” Ifthe computer in the 9-1-1 dispatch office shows that you are calling from a location outside a metropolitan area they may ask for what city you are calling, but they usually don't interrogate the caller as to the nature of the call unless the caller is so upset as to be unable to provide a quick, clear request. Their job is only to transfer your call to the agency that you request, K. Dean states his call was transferred to the ambulance who would have simultaneously transferred the call to the fire department, Both arrived about the same dime; so I do not see how anyone was put into jeopardy. Another statement thar “it is not uncommon for motor vehi- cle accidents to create dangerous fuel spills and extrication of vic- tims” is exaggeration. Very few MVAs actually create those types of hazards unless you are on the set ofa Hollywood production. I read the letter and had to ask myself “Is there an affiliation between K. Deans and a fire department?” The: letter reads as promotional propaganda touting fire departments as the “saviors” of the community. In view of plum- meting fire department. and sky-rocketing ambulance statistics, logic says that we need more of the highly trained paramedics.-K. Deans should put more thought into writing an article that attempts to frighten an uninformed public into making decisions based on one incident that he experienced. J.
