The puck drops Friday at 7 a.m. Fourteen teams of 16 to 18-year olds are taking part in the five-day tournament. By Andrew McCredie Sports Editor THE boys of winter take to the ice this weekend in the annual Fred Page Invitational midget triple-A tournament at the North Shore Winter Club (NSWC). Fourteen hockey teams from B.C., Oregon and California are taking part in the 34th run of the tournament, which each year features some of the best 16 to 18-year-olds on the West oast. . Eight teams from the Lower Mainland, two from Vancouver Island, two from California and one from Portland are in the raw. ‘Tournaments past have featured an array of talented teens who graduated into the big league, including North Van’s Paul Kariya and Brett Hull, Burnaby boys’ jac Sakic and Cliff Ronning, and goalies’ Chris Joseph and Andy Moog. Among the 14 teams competing are three North Shore based clubs — the host North Shore Winter Club, Hollyburn Country Club and North Vancouver recreation centre. Action gets underway Friday morning (Dec. 27) at 7 a.m. as nter Club to host tourney the North Vancouver rec team takes on Ridge Meadows in the tournament opener. The official opening ceremonies are slated for 7 p.m. that night. Following the opening ceremonics, at 8:15 p.m., the puck drops on the tourney’s first feature game as the North Shore Winter Club faces off against San Diego. The boys from Hollyburn take to the Winter Club ice on Friday at 5 p.m. against Victoria Racquet Club. The five-day tournament wraps up on New Year's Eve day with the C-division final slated for 11:30 a.m. next Tuesday. Both the A-division and B-division finals take place on year's deaw of 14 teams isn’t the most that have appeared in the annual tournament over the years, but accord- ing to Edgeworth the number of teams is up from the past few years.
