Fifties style fixtures are gaini SOME OF the most popular light fixtures on the market today have a feeling of deja vie about them. Contemporary in style, many of these streamlined pieces seem renii- niscent of the sleek globes, elongat- tures that were common during the “40s. °50s and “60s. Rick Garofalo, owner of a con- temporary furniture shop, is amazed atthe success he's having with a “SOs-inspired S-curved lamp. He sold three of the lamps within days af putting them on display. Garofalo says dhe New Baroque design movement, strong in Europe today. is a nigger force behind the interest in “Os, and “SOs design. The style incorporates many decorative and whimsical embellishments and shapes that were common in the mid-century decades. “This desten is fun and appealing because we've just come out of such a black period where design was laken so seriously, People scem to ike the “50s cartoon aspect of the ng popularity machine-age shapes and curves.” Furniture shop owner Richard Penachio agrees that lighting from ed cylinders and tuturistic light fix- the °50s is sought after. The lighting trend was spurred by a general revival of interest in the clothing and music of the ‘50s. Penachio said that during the late *8Gs he could sell almost anything at the high end of °50s lighting. Over the past few years, the style has grown more popular. “The rule of thumb in collecting is that people usually buy what their grandparents would have purchased when they got married. This ‘50s craze threw (out) the rule of thumb.” Mid-century fixtures are often in the same price range as new fixtures in similar styles. High design period fixtures tend to hold their value. Normand Mainville, another fur- niture store owner, said that Japanese, British, German and Belgian collectors have increased the demand and the prices of high design from the mid-century. As for adding one of these sleek fixtures to period rooms. one expert said that “lighting is like a telephone — use is more important than style.” “A sleeker light source does seem to fit in with any interior decor. If you have Victorian furni- ture you would be nuts to have Victorian lighting — the room would be too dark. Bringing in good light is u necessity.” Distributed by the Los Angeles Times syndicate.
