Strike hurting community Dear Editor: I have been employed by the North Shore Health Department for the past 17 years, My role as a com- munity home care nurse involves nursing clients who choose to die at home, giving support to their fami- lies, and being the key person involved in making sure that they have all the support systems avail- able. I may see as many as nine clients per day, most of whom are terminal- ly il, With the increasing amount of AIDS clients on our caseload our work is becoming more and more challenging. These clients are young, men and women who need and deserve a great dea! of support. I have also been involved in the intravenous therapy program which allows clients to remain at home while on IV antibiotics. Some of these patients receive treatment for as long as six weeks and are visited twice a duy by the community nurse. We work days, evenings, and also provide a night shift for our dying Cleanup action was appreciated Deer Editor: The members of the Neighborhood Awareness Group at the Lions Premier Court housing complex would like to thank Coun. Ernie Crist and Rory Chilton from North Vancouver District for their support and prompt action regard- ing the cleanup of the hazardous materials in the woods behind this housing complex. Our community group made an attempt to clean up some of this material left behind from the ofd Premier Street landfill and. some of the new material left from the construction of the build- ing when we first arrived in 1992. More areas containing rusted metal drums and other materials have been discovered since then, and we don't have the disposal capacity to get rid of it. I am eternally grateful to the Lynn Valley Lions Club to have been given the opportunity to live in such a naturally beautiful part of North Vancouver. J wouldn't live anywhere else in the world. Elise Roberts North Varcouver ff Dear Mr. Edit: I've shot a lot of f a video of my family over the last § 4 few years. How can I protect it? ff H Answer: You can start by § @ removing the plastic tab located f on the spine of your video tape. g A This wil prevent your tape from # accidentally being recorded over. Next, make an "insurance" copy § g of everything you've shot. Give it ¥ to your mom, aunt, etc., so that it & & will be it will be kept in a different g | location than the original. That § R Way, you'll be protected from fire, B theft, or even tape damage that § A can destroy your precious & # memories. Mr. Edit can provide @ @ you with high quality copies of all § & your videos. f § Remember, call Mr. Edit with your : B Video questions! : SERVICES 988-5616 clients. All shifts are provided seven days a week, We travel around our community quietly, in all weathers, aC all Hours, saving thousands of tax dollars, pro- viding a service that allows the citi- zens of our community to die with dignity in the comfort of their own home. For the past six weeks all munici- wnimunity nurses have been on strtk.. The members of our community deserve and need our services but the Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) doesn't scem to see, nor do they seem to care about the big pic- ture, and what the effects of this strike are having on the citizens and their families in our community. There are many people now remaining in hospital fonger (han necessary, or who are discharged without our services and have to visit their doctors. This is costing the taxpayer many dollars, to say nothing of the stress on these unfortunate people. The issue is the benefit package that has been given to the other 22,000 nurses in the provineg. The GVRD does not seen to want ta pro: vide this (o the 800 municipal nurses now on strike. As an example, if} were a nurse working in a hospital or a communi- ly nurse in an outlying area doing the sane job, | would be enjoying 10 extra days vacation per year. I currently receive less holidays than any other nurse in B.C. for the amount of dine E have worked. Is not my work equally as valu- able and stressful as the next nurse's’? The municipalities ure asked to fund only 30% of the benelit pack- age for the preventive care nurses, who make up a small percentage of the nurses involved in this strike. This is a minimal cost item because most preventive care nurses are not replaced while on vacation. We are in the middle of a political game, which is an absolute tragedy for our community.
