94 - Wednesday, November 17, 1993 — North Shore News 4 SOBERING STATISTICS about violence on the North Shore were presented during a Nov. 3 Together Against Violence forum held at Lions Gate Hospital. By A.P. McCredie News Reporter November has been proclaimed Together Against Violence month by all three North Shore municipalities in support of the multi-organization committee dedicated to addressing the prob- lem of violence in our society. “One definition of violence is the use of power control by one person over another, or by a froup over an individual,”’ said panelist Carol Ward-Hall of North Shore Crisis Sevices Society (NSCSS). According to statistics presented at the forum, the misuse of power control on the North Shore is in- creasing. @ in 1991, 40 North Shore women fled to the Emily Murphy House — a shelter for women and children in abusive situations. In 1992, the number had increased 67% to 67. - @ The number of calls made to the NSCSS's 24-hour crisis line increased by 20%, from 586 to 702, over the same period. @ The number of West Van- couver women calling the line in- creased 125% (from 36 to 80) from 1991 to 1992. A major contributor to the Together Against Violence initia- tive is North Shore Health, which has commissioned the Violence Prevention Project on the North Shore. The organization, usually deal- ing. in immunization and other health-related projects, has taken on the issue of violence because, according to project coordinator Franca Bertoncin, ‘‘we have iden- tified violence and abuse as a health issue.’’ The theme was echoed by all panelists. “We wanted to go beyond the actual numbers and look at how violence impacts on the lives of people on the North Shore,” said UWeebkyd HRISTMAS .. I've been knocking on doors since April and there are a number of issues that people have told me are important: ® the limited accessibility to affordable housing ® a rising youth crime rate and limited options for our teens * a decreasing sense of safety in our neighbourhoods * redevelopment of City-owned land in Lower Lonsdale - These issues are too important to be entrusted to politicians who wont to TELL us what is going to happen in our community. | will listen and act on what you want to tell Council.
