Methanol
refuelling
station

opens end
of March

THE FIRST methanol
refuelling station in the
Lower Mainland will be
located at Burnaby’s Mid-
dlegate Mohawk station ac-
cording to the energy, mines
and petroleum resources
ministry.

The methanol facility is
slated to open at the end of
March and will pump
**M85,’" which is 85%
methanol, 15% gasoline.

Prime customers will be BC
Hydro (which just purchased
28 flexible fuel vehicles) and
BC Tel. The new vehicles can
fill up on either M85 or gaso-
fine depending on fuel
availability.

Major automakers now
producing flexible fuel vehi-
cles inchide General Motors,
Chrysler, Ford and
Volkswagen.

The Lower Mainland sta-
tion is a part of the Light
Duty Methanol Vehicle pro-
gram, which is evaluating
methanol for vehicles across
Canada.

B.C.’s_ first retail M85
refuelling outlet opened in
Kamloops last fall. There are
stations in Calgary and
Toronto as well.

Throughout North
America, there are now about
“50 stations offering M85.
California is the U.S. centre
of activity with about 2,000

- flexible fuel vehicles on the
road,

Methanol is a liq-
uid-alcohol fuel that can be
pumped like ordinary gasoline
and is already used to make a
gasoline octane-enhancer. It
can be produced from many
feedstocks — natural gas,
coal, wood — almost any-
thing containing carbon.

In B.C., it is produced at
Methanex Corporation’s plant
in Kitimat using natural gas
as the main feedstock.
