Local karate teams make fine sh TEAMS from West and North Vancouver won almost 40 medals at a recent karate tournament held by the Gima-ha Association in White Rock. Biack-belt Shelley Jones, of North Vancouver, was judged best all-round competitor in the women’s division, after taking first place in kata and second in kumite. The North Vancouver junior team, Ali Jiwani, Ivfhan Jiwani and Mitsuru Nakagawa, won the Junior Team Kata Trophy, while the senior team from West Van- couver — Cathy Stott, Lloyd Marlor and Daniel Baker - went home with the event’s most prestigious award, the trophy for Senior Team Kumite. (Kata, meaning ‘‘form,” is a series of dramatic and stylized moves of varying speed and inten- sity, made against a series of imaginary opponents. Kumite is the application of kata skills in combat between two opponents attempting to score points by striking target areas on the body.) NV gets Olympic preview of men’s basketball teams NORTH VANCOUVER, for the first time in its history, will play host to an Olympic preview of four of the top men’s basketball teams in the worid. During the evenings of May 21 and 22, Canada’s Olympic team takes on the national teams of China, Mexico and Commonwealth of Independent States., formerly the Soviet Union, in the Pac-Rim Classic at the Capilano College Sport- splex. Canada’s national team will be bolstered by the presence of several players with profes- sional experience such as Mike Smrek, formerly with the NBA Los Angeles Lakers and Bill Weonnington, a former Dallas Maverick player. Coach Ken Shieids is prepar- ing his team to qualify for the ‘92 Alympic Games in Barcelona, and he is expecting to play his top players in this tournament. The Pac-Rim Classic will give Shields an indication of just where the Canadian team Stands against top-notch Olympic-calibre competition. Team Canada will have to prove itself against a strong CALS. team which enters the tournament as defending gold medalists from the 1988 Games in Seoul, Korea. and recently, as the second-place finishers in the 1990 World Champicn- ships. “This is the first interna- tional basketball tournament of this magnitude ever to be held on the North Shore and we are very pleased to be able to host the tournament in the Sport- splex for our community to en- joy,’ said Joseph lacobellis, manager of the Sportsplex fa- cility.
