Canada announces Davis Cup lineup TENNIS VETERAN GRANT Connell cf North Vancouver will lead the Canadian Davis Cup team that will represent Canada against Sweden at the upcoming Davis Cup tie in the NEC World Group series, Jan. 31 to Feb. 2, at the Pacific National Exhibition Agrodome. The Vancouver roster announc- ed last week by Pierre Lamarche, captain of the Canadian Davis Cup team, includes: Connell, a 25-year old lefthander who is Canada’s top-ranked player; Mar- tin Laurendeau, 27 of Mont- Royal, Que.; Gienn Michibata, 29, of Etobicoke, Ont.; Chris Pridham, 26, of Oakville, Ont.; and Daniel Nestor, 19, of Toron- to. A sixth player may be added in the new year, possibly 24 year-old Davis Cup veteran An- drew Sznajder cf Torontc or up- and-coming Quebec junior 18- year-old Greg Rusedski of Pointe-Claire. Lamarche will serve as captain for the seventh time with- Louis Cayer of Verdun, Que. acting as head coach. With Lamarche at the _ helm, Canada has won five Davis Cup series (4-1 versus Uruguay at Montreal in February of 1989; 4-1 against Brazil in Vancouver in February of 1990; 5-0 against Paraguary in Asuncion in April of 1990; 3-2 over the Netherlands in Toronto in September of 1990; and 3-2 against Cuba in Havana in September of 1991); and lost just two (3-0 against Argentina in Buenos Aires in Apri! of 1989 and 4-1 versus Spain in Canegena in February of 1991). Connell comes in as Canada’s top-ranked player and reigning Canadian men’s singles champion at the SunLife Nations. He has won five of his six career Davis Cup singles matches, inluding two in Havana to help keep Canada in the World Gioup of the top 16 tennis countries. He is expected to play singles and doubles with regular partner Michibata, who is the dean of the team. Michibata, whose first Davis Cup appearance was in 1980, has an overall record of 11-14 (4-8 in singles and 7-8 in doubles). He is a two-time former Canadian men’s singles champion. Pridham starred in Canada’s 4-1 defeat of Uruguay at Mon- treal in 1989 and this year teamed with Nestor to win the Canadian men’s doubles title. Nestor was a member of the September ’90 team against the Netherlands but did not play. He is a former Ca- nadian under-18 champion who was a member of the Sunshine Cup squad that won the under-18 world team title in 1989 and finished second in 1999. Laurendeau has made two of- ficial Davis Cup appearances (0-1 in singles and 0-1 in doubles) but has had among the best results of any Canadian in major tourna- ments in the past five years, reaching the fourth round of the 1989 U.S. Open and the third -round at Wimbledon earlier this year. The Davis Cup squad members are scheduled to arrive to open training camp .in Vancouver on Jan. 24, the official Davis Cup draw will be held Jan. 30, and the two opening singles matches will ‘be played Jan. 31.
