MAILBOX Money advice makes cents Dear Editor: Michael Grenby’s recent column, Diversify your money, prompts me to point out that the financial freedom most of us scek can only be found on the far side of discipline. This means, certainly in the carly stages, a com- mitment to hard work, disciplined savings and, where applicable, the paying-down of non-productive con- sumer debt. Those setting out to build assets, with a view to increasing their net worth on a yearly basis, can re- main motivated by remembering that no matter how painful the process may be, the price of failure will always exceed the price of success. In extreme cases, failure to effectively manage personal finances can lead to untold misery, in- cluding the complete breakdown of family Jife with all its adverse effects upon our most priceless assets — our children. In today’s of priorities. fast-changing and where the gap between the haves and the have-nots is sure to grow, a disciplined approach to personal money management should be high on evervone’s list uncertain world, Those wishing to get started should resolve to be businesslike, and to work strictly from monitored fi- nancial statements. They should plan to make the best possible use of their money and other financial itself. assets onc year at a time. On this basis, the future will tend to take care of Keep things simple. Too much complexity clutters the mind, and usually works against what we are try- ing to do. And, as Michael Grenby correctly points out, diversify. There is added safety in numbers. David J. Gowman. CLU North Vancouver Noel Wright’s war words weighed Dear Editor: In his column of July 25, Noel Wright) quotes a 19th century German leader who said that war is the continuation of policy by other means, and Mr. Wright asks, ‘*Was it Bismarck?"* It was not. “War is a mere continuation of policy by other means”* is the title ef paragraph 24 of chapter one of On War by Karl von Clausewitz, 1780-1831. Along with Mr. Wright's con- cluding remarks one should con- sider the views of Karl Linnebach of the German Enstituts of Mili- tary Research who thought that ihe Allies (after the First: World War) had made the fatal mistake West Van needs course Dear Editor: There seems to be a great deal of debate regarding the proposed golf course development in West Vancouver. Recently, my son and his friends asked that | drive them to Gleneagles Golf Course for an early morning tee-time. The need for an additional golf course was certainly demonstrated to me when, at 5:30 a.m., we discovered a line-up had formed for the first tee-time of the day. f would urge those opposing the golf course to seriously consider the need for recreational devel- opments for our residents. Bob Mackin, Sr. West Vancouver Road turned into playground Dear Editor: There’s a preventable accident destined to happen on the 500- block East St. James Road. Large numbers of small children on trikes and other free wheeling contraptions are speeding all over the road, turning it into a veritable playground — a deadly one! Their parents must be real “space cadets’? not to realize the danger their children are in and also for the lethal message they are conveying to them. Namely that it’s okay to play on the road. It’s a safe, fun place to be! J.
