16 — Wednesday, September 5, 1990 - North Shore News W. Van man nets golf title WEST VANCOUVER'’S Greg Trammell won the Canadian Junior Men's Golf Championship in Saskatoon last week. With a 293 total score on a par 72 course, 17-year-old Tram- mel! repistered = 69-71-75-78 tally. A student at Collingwood, Trammell lead the tourney after the first three rounds by five strokes. It's been a busy summer for Trammell who competed in the World Junior Championship in July. Since then, he played on a four-man team at the Junior Americas in Los Angelos where he came 2Ist out of North America’s top 60 junior golfers. He also played on the Eddie Hogan team in Portland, Oregon and played the men's finals last weekend in his home club, Capilano, after being the low qualifier for the tourney. Seniors hold tennis event THE SENIORS Tennis Association of the North Shore held its first round robin ‘“‘tournament’’ and picnic at Murdo Fraser Park recently. The eventual winners of the ladies event was Susan Stastny while the men’s winner was Maurice Krafczyk. Fifty active association members competed in the round robin. Pat Stansfield, president of S.T.A.N.S., said the association's membership is climbing to over 200 seniors and more are wel- come. The seniors tennis group plays on public tennis courts and are actively pursuing the development of indoor courts for the public. Cruisers swim to bronze medals NORTH VANCOUVER Cruisers summer swimmers shone at the Provincial Championships held in Trail, Aug. 17-19. Riedal performances were achieved by division one (6-8 years) swimmers Jessica Facini and Ian Lark. Facini netted the medal in the 50-metre free style and the 50- metre breast stroke while Lark was third in the 50-metre back stroke and the 100-metre freestyle. Paul Norris, swimming in division five, won a bronze medal in the 100-metre backstroke. The division five girls relay team, consisting of Marie Milner, Lindsay Donaldson, Kim Dobbin and Jackie Hicks, won a bronze medal in the 200-metre free style relay. The following swimmers succeeded in placing in the champion- ship finals (top eight in the province): Robin McKillop, Jennifer Currie, and Susan Gardiner, as well as Donaldson, Norris, Facini in other events. e Drop-in sports activities begin IF YOU are too busy to commit yourself to scheduled sports but still like to get out and participate, the North Shore Neighbour- hood House is offering fall drop-in sports activities. Drop-in basketbail is held on Mondays from 7:30 to 11:20 p-m., while drep-in volleyball] meets Sundays from 7 to 9 p.m. Badminton is offered every Thursday from 8 to 10 p.m. As well, participants who are house members can bring their own equipment and use the gym any time when it is not in use. To become 2 member, participants are asked to pay a yearly membership fee of $9 for adults, $8 for teens and $16 for a fami- ly. an yearly membership entitles a member to participate in some activities offered at the Neighbourhood House. SPORTS West Van skating pair win gold, silver medals WEST VANCOUVER | skating pair Varsn ONeill and Victor Kraale, won a gold and silver medab oat othe Thornhill-Central Ontario Region Summer Skate held Aug. 18-19 in Toronto, Skating for Hollyburn Countrs Club, O'Neili and Reraaty cammed first place in the original dance event and second in the free dance event. The summer skate is the largest eastern Canadian skating event with more than 1,000 competitors from Canada and is also the last competition of the year. Bronze medallists at the 1990 Canadian Championships in novice dance, the focal pair moved up to the junior category this season and were successful in a field of up to 17 competitors. They won a gold and silver ut the Minto Ottawa and Montreal competitions. A member of Canada’s 1990 Commonwealth team, Cathcart went to New Zealand where the triathlon was a demonstration sport. He has been competing in short-course triathlons since 1981. But he says the lronman re- quired an entirely different race style. “les a whole different ball game. In a short course, you go all out. In Ironman you have to hold yourself out,’* he said. Another North Shore Ironman competitor, Mark Shorter, also qualified for the World Ironman, finishing 66th overall with a time Of 10:21:45. But, like Cathcart, the North Vancouver insurance agent is un- sure of whether he'll go to Hawaii because of the time and expense involved. Shorter, 33, was 23rd in his 30-34 age group. Meanwhile, three North Shore athletes featured in an article leading up to the fronman — Patricia: Daw, Dean Milner and Robert Paige — finished the race with the respective times of 13:57:04, 11:03:54, and 13:13:29.
