Mian jailed for driving offence A 24-YEAR-OLD White Rock man was sentenced Friday in North Vancouver provincial court to seven days in jail after he pleaded guilty to driving while he was prohibited from doing sc. NV firm gets $136,100 loan NORTH Vancouver’s Skytainer Industries Inc. has received a $136,100 loan from the Western Diversification Fund to help it develop a new bulk container for airline freight and passenger pian i Capilano-Howe Sound MP Mary Collins announced recent! Skytainer will work with the B.C. Research Corp. and Canada’s two national airlines, Air Canada and Canadian Airlines Interna- tional, to develop the prototype and first 160 units of the new con- tainer. There are currently no Cansdian manufacturers of the con- tainers, which are known as Unit Loading Devices (ULDs), and Canadian Airlines consequently imports containers from ihe U.S. and Europe. Skytainer plans to manufacture ULDs that will last longer and require less maintenance than those products now on the market. The company will design one ULD for the Airbus A320, which will start replacing 737, 727 and DC-9 aircraft next year. Skytainer’s project is expected to cost a total of $477,300 and create 10 new local jobs. “This project offers Canada, through 2 Canadian company, the opportunity to enter a burgeoning world market,’’ Collins said in a * prepared statement. ‘“‘With the technical advice of Air Canada and Canadian Airlines International in design and the expertise of the B.C. Research Corp. in development, Skytainer has excellent pro- spects for market penetration and growth.’’ The Western Diversification Fund was established to assist in the diversification of the Western Canadian economy by encouraging new products, new markets, new technology, improved productivi- ty and import replacements. Rescue boat to be on display THE NORTH Shore Lifeboat Society (NSLS) will have a 26-foot Canadian Coast Guard auxiliary rescue boat open for inspection at the upcoming Deep Cove Days Sept. 4. The Deep Cove-based rescue boat and its equipment will be docked at the government wharf throughout the day. NSLS members wil} be on band to explain their role in responding to local marine emergencies.
