should remain Dear Editor: Regarding Ald. Crist’s letter on illegal suites in your May 6 edition. He makes some good points against what he fears or construes to be a possibility of eventual over-crowded tenements. But why should it come to that? Surely the answer lies in a firm clamip-down now by the council by denying permission for anyone to have more than two families or equivalent, in a single-family dwelling. Those that are presently in ex- istance and confined to a second family in a basement suite and liv- ing normal quiet lives should be allowed to remain. What ..about young couples whose only hope of obtaining the house of their dreams is to plan to FEST rent part of the house, not to make profits, but to assist with an otherwise unattainable mortgage: Now you might reply that they should not buy a home that they cannot afford, but isn’t that: the reverse of tenements, that it main- tains the neighborhood and might even improve it if the house was a new building? After all, -affordable housing does not necessarily mean better housing. If your, hard-won standards are indeed in danger of being sacri- ficed, then by all means stick to your guns, but the majority of people are, by far, law-abiding, decent citizens. A. In the 1984 federal election, the percentages of the popular vote obtained by the candidates were: Chuck Cook, 45 per cent; Iona Campagnolo, 28 per cent; David Schreck, 25 per cent; and others, two per cent. A plurality of 8,500 votes for Chuck Cock. In comparing the results of the recent poll. with those of the past election, it would appear that our pepular member of Parliament is heading for another well-earned landslide victory. Ernest W.
