One of them, now worn and faded, dates back to 1945. Hireen recently joined the Red Cross plasmapheresis program, a new dimension in blood donation. During this process, only the plasma portion of the donor’s blood is collected. Because the red cells are returned to the donor dur- ing plasmapheresis, such donations may be made more frequently than whole blood donations, which can only be made once every 90 days or four times a year. Hireen plans to donate his plasma at least once a month, at the permanent blood donor clinic at 4750 Oak Street in Vancouver. ‘When asked his reasons for becoming a regular blood donor, Hireen said: ‘‘I knew there was a need for blood. I also wanted to set a good example for the younger generation,”’ Upcoming blood donor clinics on the North Shore will be held at the following locations and times.
