Plan a kitchen
that suits you

by the National Assoctation at
Home Builders, homeowners
choose the Kilehen as the first
room in the house for renovations.

Whether you've just moved into
an older home. ure preparing to
sell your home, or just can't stand
your obsolete kitchen another
minuie, you may be a cundidate
tora kitchen remodelling job.

Here are some helpful remodell-
ing tips:

¢ Confine spending to no more
than 10 per cent of the estimated
value of your home.

e Kitchen layout should be
planned around three centres of
activity: Cooking, serving and
clean up. Each centre should be
between four and seven feet apart.

9 Walkway space between work
areas should be no less than 30 in-
ches,

* Allow enough space between

the range burners and side walls to
prevent splashing of discoloration
ot the wall,

® Place vour microwave oven in
wconvenient area. Useful items to
have on hand in vour “microwave
corner’ include paper towels, way
paper, microwave-sale baking
dishes and a gloss measuring cup.

* Microwave ovens should be
placed two inches below to 10 in-
ches above elbow level.

* Hanging appliances can solve
the problem of portable appliance
clutter.

* Consider incorporating a trash
compactor into your remodelling
plan. An ecologically-sound addi-
tion to the kitchen, some compac-
tors require as little as 12 inches of
under counter cabinet space.

© Many remodellers are adding a
home management centre in the
kitchen. A desk, bookshelves and
phone provide a useful area for
storing books and grocery lists, or
taking phone messages,

* Frequent bakers or bread-
makers may want to add @ counter.
