As for rain, when a place gets
only seven inches of the stuff a
year, one doesn’t expect two
straight days of it.

But, sure enough - as Western
Airlines approached the runway
big drops began sliding up the
windows.

And even though you expect the
desert to be cold at night, next
morning we could still see our
breath.

I was glad to be wrapped up in
my raincoat with a thick sweater
underneath - pessimism lives.

The first thing a visitor needs to
know about Arizona - especially
the Phoenix area - is that a car is
essential.

OLD RANCHERS

The old ranchers who plotted
these cities sure didn’t want
anyone peering in their bedroom
windows!

They didn't much care for
height, either, so the buildings
took to width. Unfortunately, the
more recent buildings were built on
the sites of almost all the historic
buildings so very little historical
flavor is left.

It appears to me that if you
wanted to do a walking tour of
just the downtown core, better
wear hiking boots and schedule it
over a couple of days.

Because of the rain (there are no
storm drains), my comfortable
low-heeled sandals remained in the
bag and I was stuck with a pair of
high heels, It was these that led me
to the second tesson a female
traveller needs to learn.

Never, ever, wear shoes with
thin heels and plastic or steel lifts.
I nearly broke my neck!

They go in for a lot of shiny tile
floors in Arizona - bloody acres of
them. The worst ones I found were
in the famous Metro Shopping
Mall and I must have looked like I
had a middle-ear problem as |
pussy-footed around, clutching for
support.

Besides the Metro Mall, we
spent a couple of hours in the
famous Borgata - an outdoor mall
containing some mighty fancy
shops. Leave your Visa card
behind if you don’t want some real
temptation. Some of the shops are
closed Sunday which isn’t true of
Metro — it’s jammed.

BARGAINS

The last time we visited Arizona
we did a fot of our Christmas
shopping there — amazed at both
the selection and the bargains.

Unfortunately, our money isn't
what it used to be so the bargains
are few, but if there's something
you’ve been searching for, chances
are you'll find it in Arizona.

If you find yourself ready for
lunch when you visit Borgata, trv
the White Truffle, a European-

style sandwich and coffee shop.

Anyway, it seems to be the ‘‘in’’
place with the locals and you'd
better make reservations a couple
of days in advance.

The average Canadian Snowbird
is apt to want condominium ac-
commodation, especially if the stay
is planned to be a month or more.

wondering about the monstrous
Saguero cacti, dotted all over the
desert landscape in Arizona, | now
have the true story on why some

why some «row none.

The Saguero (silent ‘'g'’),
despite its height, grows trom a
tiny root ball, When the winds
blow strongly or when there is an
earth tremor, the cactus loses its
grip, sc. to speak. When this hap-
pens it quickly grows an arm on
the opposite side for balance.
