They are needed for us, to save our lives and limbs. Be we ever so nimble we have good reason to fear tor our safety each time we use a non-signalled § cross- walk in this Community. For here we have a considerable percentage of rude and reckless drivers who rush madly through Ambleside and beyond along Bellevue and Marine. Such drivers treat pedestrians as though they were flagged poles on a ski slope. For, while about to drive over an occupied cross- walk they try to beat the walker approaching the cen- tre, almost running over his toes, while from the other direction they almost clip his heels. From personal observation from a car and from the ground some of the lights are ill-timed but seem to be im- proving. But surely the little delays involved do not war- rant the shrill cnes of your editorial or of those | have heard from people accustom- ed to uninterrupted passage while rushing off to their shopping or social events. The alleged ill-effects of the new lights on the business of our merchants seems to me exaggerated nonsense. e.g. When driving West, with no left turns, what does one do to reach a store on the South side of Marine? Anyone ac- customed to driving in a City anywhere will turn North, drive around a block and thence South. Perhaps con- gested parking will oblige one to walk a block or two. Pity! Alas, Sir, our traffic, com- plete with some odd drivers and walkers, is increasing. Qur community is growing. Let us grow with it. David L. Mathieson West Vancouver Dear Editor: I] thought you might be in- terested in this recent announcement made by the Benchers of the Law Society of British Columbia on the issue of lawyer advertising. This was published in the September Benchers’ Bulletin. | have a natural interest in this topic since | was the first lawyer in Canada lo advertise and was involved in a lengthy discipline and court battle with the Benchers over this issue. Also Chris Lloyd. when he was with your paper, showed a great deal of in- terest in my case and the issue of lawyer advertising and ran a great many articles about it It would now appear that the Law Society has come a full 360 degrees and 1s now endorsing lawyer advertising and even wishes to become “tthe leader in the field of lawyer advertising." Radio and TV advertising will also be allowed.
