FOR KIDS Battle | for By JOANNE MacDONALD BRITISH COLUM- BIA remains one of three provinces in Canada which does not protect children under six with legislation for the mandatory wearing of car restraint devices, despite statistics show- ing that a high number in that age group are injured or killed an- nually in motor vehicle accidents. Alberta and Prince Ed- ward Island are the only other provinces without car restraint legislation protec- ting youngsters under six. Statistics from ICBC show that from January, 1981 to December, 1983, a total of 40 infants and = children under six were killed in motor vehicle accidents. Over 2000 were injured over the same period. A study conducted by Dr. Peter Cooper, the manager of the Road Safety Planning department at ICBC, revealed that in 1982, a total of 672 children under six were injured or killed in car accidents. Of that total, 545 were in automobiles — 312 children or 57 per cent of those children were unrestrained. In 60 cases, the vehicles in which the children’ were riding were not equipped with restraining devices.
