Your editorial on fire
alarms in apartment
buildings underlined the
mistaken attitude of many
people to fire alarms in
buildings. Ignoring warnings
is dangerous — every alarm
activation should be taken
seriously.

First, when you hear the
fire alarm phone the Fire
Department. The alarm in
your building does not ring in
the -Fire Department. They
will only know of the alarm if
you tell them. Second, get
yourself and your family
down the nearest fire exit and
out of the building. Do not
use the elevator.

Once you have called the

Fire Department they will
take charge, so stay out of
the building until a Fire
Department official tells you
you may return.

Since fire alarm systems
were designed by man they
will be imperfect. Personal
catastrophe can be avoided
by believing that all fire
alarms are real and walking
not running to the nearest
exit.

those who will not see, and
Mr. Grubel’s view of Chile
(Jan. 8, 1984) is reminiscent
of some of the reports of
‘‘achievement’® which came
out of Hitler Germany in the
30's.
