C4 - Sunday News, Jannary 24, 1982 Pa women THINKING SLIM “se Pounds are merely the symptoms “QO, that this too, too solid flesh would melt, Thaw, and resolve itself into a dew!" This lament of Hamlet's could well be the motto of anyone who has ever found himself enveloped in un- wanted layers of excess flesh. Yet, as the dieter learns only too quickly, fat is a persistent substance, stub- bornly resisting any effort on our part to wish, dream, melt, dissolve, or evaporate it away. Only steady, determined effort over time can have any effect on the problem. Yet too many people fail in this effort because they fail ACROSS Church part (pl) 1 Curt the hp 3 Selfish 6 Sleep noisily individual 11 Predatory 4 House birds addition 13 Of a 5 Gun an nationality engine 14 Mutate 6 Female saint 15 Slacken (abbr) 16 Of God (Lat) 7 Hockey 17 Sound of a league (abbr ) dove 19 Entertainment 8 nila (comp group (abbr) = g wash away 20 Compass 10 Outer (prefix) point 12 Denom:maton 22 Ines (contr ) 13 Abrasion 23 Primate 18 Artist's 24 Tic. medium 26 ny . 21 With no eanuts trouble character 28 Automotive so- 23 Man of letters ciety (abbr) 25 Roman patnot 30 Cereal grass 27 Group of — 31 It is {contr } Western allies 32 Indefinite in order 33 Place to sk: 35 Alley . 37 Shy 38 Western. hemisphere or- ganization (abbr ) 40 Los Angeles quarterback 42 Exctamation 43 Vase with a pedestal 44 Tech 46 False pathos 49 Egg 52 Belong 53 Indicates 54 Shorthand 55 Rants DOWN 1 Berd teed CHANGE YOUR CAREER TO We are holding a presentation for prospective Students for our two-year full-time Business Management programs, which begin in September, on Wednesday February 3rd at 7.00 in At17 (the All College Lounge) Our programs provide you with a comprehensive education in the basic managerial skills They have & Practical foundation for those who wish to enter a career in business either as an independent entrepreneur or a8 @ prospective employee. We don't cure measles by painting over the spots, and we don't cure an eating problem by focusing only on the numbers on the scale. For it is, in fact, an eating problem that underlies most obesity. Pounds are merely a symptom of the difficulty. Just so, the “cure” to obesity lies, not in merely shedding a few excess pounds, but in profound, life-long changes in the habits and attitudes that got the overweight indi- vidual into trouble in the first place. They promise a certain number of pounds lost in a certain ime. Desperate dieters, mistakenly believing pounds to be the whole problem, grasp at these diet straws. They may even lose a few pounds. But, because they retum promptly to their old eating habits as soon as the diet is over, they are dismayed when the symp- toms of their problems — unwanted pounds — return again, and again, and again. Even people who have found the best road toward solving their difficulty sometimes forget the cause of their problem. At weight control classes, members hover around the weigh-in room, checking the figures on the scale as if they were some sacred oracle of failure or success. The member who has stayed on her eating plan all week comes out feeling like a failure, having lost “only” a pound, while the cheat who has come to class after polishing off a sausage pizza is elated, having “cheated” the scales of a couple of pounds. Yet the more faithful member is the real winner, regardless of what the scales may say on any given day. (And we all know that the scales are influenced by a number of factors other than our faithfulness — or lack of it — in following our food plan).
