THE FIVE-DAY isolation of Squamish from the
North Shore ended Monday afternoon, when the
highway was finally reopened to traffic, two days

behind schedule.

The first trucks crossed
the newly built metal Bailey
Bridge across the M Creek,
the scene of last. Wed-
nesday’s horror mudslide
-which washed away the
wooden bridge just north of
Lions Bay and devoured cars
which plunged from the
roadway at 3:45 p.m.

Fury Creek to swell toa level
whereby it tore out.a 100 ft.
stretch of road between that
creek and Porteau Creek.

The Highways’ crews
rebuilt the connection there
and topped it off with a
gravel surface.

‘Though Squamish
residents now have road
access to the Lower
Mainland, which had
previously only been ac-
cessible by rail, communities
further north were - still
stranded even after Monday.
