Playing at the Capitol 6 this week. - o many things to see With a double anniversary underway, staff at the Vancouver Museum are museum’s biggest show ever -- “Cabinets of Curiosities”, a display of more than treasures from the city’s colorful past, 1,000 which opens to the public December 1. The museum-planetarium complex in Vanier Park was officially opened October 26, 1968, but the museum's roots go a lot deeper than that. November 1 marks the 87th anniversary of the inauguration of the Art, Historical and Scientific Association. It was under their auspices that the city’s collections of historical material and native works of art began to develop. In 1898, Vancouver City Council approved a= small grant to the Association in acknowledgment of its achievements. Ever since then, through the means of an annual civic grant and a self-help policy, the museum has grown slowly but surely The first City Museum was boused in the old Carnegie Library building at Hastings and Main in 1905, and remained there until 1968, when the collections were transferred to their present home - the Vancouver Museum tn Vanier Park at Kitsilano Point, built as the City’s spectral proyect marking Canada’s” cen- tenary The generous gift of a milhon and o half dollars from the late H.R Mac. Millan made it possible to incorporate a planctarium into the same building From the beginning, the distinctive mushroom dome atop the planctarium proved to be a mixed blessing from museum staff's poiat of view The dome was and iss a landmark, one of the standout sights of the city skyline Inevitably — the building came to be known s “the Planctarium ” Every body knew about the astronomy shows that were produced upstairs, but the fact that the City Museum now had a new home downstairs was often over- looked. During the next decade, many superb— exhibitions came and went: the ac- claimed Art of the People’s Republic of China. Kosmos ‘77 from the USSR, Treasures’ of London, Discovery 1778: Captain ready for. the. Cook and the Peoples of the Pacific, Arts of Conflict, Art Deco, Los Mayas, Realism, Stained Giass in Vancouver 1890-1940, and The Look of Music among them. For many people, these shows were presented “at the Planetarium” although they were in fact museum exhibits on view in the museum galleries. ‘Cabinets of curiosities’ should do much to clear up the confusion. The largest exhibition ever to be presented at the Vancouver Museum, it represents the cream of Canada's largest civic museum collection.
