24 - Wednesday, February 13, 1991 - Narth Shore News Drache’s Universevisions is an extraordinary saga, one | F A picture is worth a thousand words, then Natalie that has taken neariy half a lifetime to create. “* don’t know whether to call this a work in progress or a life in progress,” the petite West Van- couver artist laughs in the hallway of her Yaletown studio. Drache’s project is an enormous undertaking, one that combines visual art, primitive poetry, ancient history and music. ft’s made up of an amazing collection of murals, paintings and sketches based on creation myths of 18 different cultures. Drache has spent the last 20 years travelling the globe resear- ching different cultural viewpoints. She's planning to transform it all into a 13-hour animated film series, due out in the year 2000. The Soulcatcher is composed of dozens of small profiles of human faces, and Drache is inviting visitors to the Ferry Building ex- hibit to donate their profiles to the ongoing character design. “We want to develop the whole thing as a prototype that can be on the forefront of educa- tion,” Drache says of Uni- versevisions from under heart- shaped glasses. ‘‘Our goal is to improve relationships and pro- mote greater understanding within a nation and between nations.” The total of the work hours Drache has devoted to Uni- versevisions is mind-boggling, but See Work page 25 ARTIST NATALIE Drache (centre) has produced a collection of murals, storyboards and tests for her lifetime project, Universevisions.
