found only on goats living
in the high plateau regions
of Ladakh and the central
plains of Inner Mongolia.

zero temperatures, — the
goats develop a down-like
wool on their underbellies
and neck that traps in body
heat.

Pashmina wool is avail-
abie only in the short sum-
mer season when nomadic
herders drive the goats
down the mountains to
gather the wool.

At these lower levels, the
goats shed their pashmina
or it is combed out by the herders, who separate
it from the regular cashmere wool. The pashmi-
na only grows back when the goats return to
high altitudes.

The cashmere shawl had been mentioned in
1790 by the Journal de la Mode et du Goiit (jour-
nal of fashion and taste) but it wasn’t und tie
French Empire period and Napolcon’s Egyptian
Campaign some years later thar the shaw came
into favour in France.

Exported from England to France, it
remained well established throughout the 19th
century. The finest were from Kasmir, according
to one resource on the history of costume —
“they were imitated, but never equalled, in
England, France and Scotland.”
