FORD of Canada will
add a spirited sibling
to its family of Escort
sedans and wagons
with the April launch
of the all-new Escort
ZX2,

Vancouver and points in
between, ¢ nadians caught a
sneak preview of the new
two- -door coupe at major
auto shows in 1997,

Designated a 1998 modei
and named after the 130-
horsepower, Zetec 2.0-Htre
engine that powers it (the X
is derived ¢ ores tra-
ditional * moniker), the
two-duor Escort ZX2_ is
highly differentiated from
the redesigned 1997 Ford
Escort that debuted fast
May.

Longer and wider than its
four-door sibling, the Escort
ZX2 was designed from new
sheet metal and features
frameless door glass to
accentuate clean fines.

“With its unique exterior
lines, engine and interior
appointments, the new ZX2
is not a qvo-door version of
the Escort sedan,” notes
Pierre Corriveau, Ford of
Canada’s brand manager for
Escort.

“To the contrary, our
objective was to design an
exciting and distinctive
coupe that would appzal to
younger buyers who are con-
cerned about looking good
and expressing individual
style.”

Among the standard fea-
tures the 1998 Escort ZX2
shares with the Escorre LX
sedan are: Crystalline, inner-
aiming headlamps of a modi-
fied teardrop shape — nor-
maily seen on much pricier
vehicles — which offer a
jewel-like appearance and
superior lighting characteris-
tics; one-piece side body
stamping for improved fit
and reduced _ vibration,
harshness, wind and road
noise; bolt-on wheel covers
to help eliminate luss or
theft; 14-inch tires; solar
tinted glass for reduced heat
build-up

It also features a battery
saver system which automat-
ically shuts down interior
lights after 10 minutes when
the ignition key is removed;
rear-seat heat ducts for
improved passenger comfort;
front and rear cupholders;
fully synchronized five-speed
