ETL Gt SE TE RRR HRS jhis and wrongs ARE you and I the only sane folk left? Consider the fact thar a leather-clad lesbian is now B.C.”s chief human rights commissioner. A few years ago such an appointment would have caused outrage. Today, any- thing goes — with the help - of the NDP, that is. I gave the lady a short mention recently. Her name is Mary- Woo Sims and before she became a chief human rights commissioner in B.C. she was a Chief Lesbian in Ontario, having ‘been chairman of Mctro Toronto’s Gay and Lesbian Issues Community. She was also one of Bob Rae’s left-hand girls before the voters tossed him into the trash can. Not to worry, though. For Glen Clark & Co.. ‘she was too good to ; obs for the girls. Especially shose girls. Shortly after my piece ‘appeared the Vanceaver Sun gaye her the front page . treatme ne. Her background was documented but the piece © was essentially a song of praise. There she was, on her 1200ce motorbike, “ready to ride.” Ready to ride over ene- mies of the people like me, that is. Which is why those would-be totalitarians gave her the job. Once upon a time admin- istrative positions went to those who had brains and neutrality. That time is long gonc. Today it’s a case of foxes- and-the-hen-coop. That’s why we have candidates from Africa and India run- ning our misnamed human tights procedures (Dosanjh himself, Harinder Mahil, etc.). Plus folk from the right pressure groups. Woo makes no bones about her task. According to the Sua, “experience tells her that governments must stam out intolerance — whether discrimination is contained in a law or is manifest, say, in a newspaper column writ- ten by Doug Collins of the North Shore News...”. Get it? “Intolerance” must be stamped out. Stam out the critical press, too, i necessary. What is intolerance? Anything the “people’s court” folk say it is. Why cise do we have the NDP’s atrocity of a Human Rights Act? Whe is the more intoler- ant, the Woos or their vic- tims? “The intellectual heirs of European enlightenment always maintained it was paramount to protect the rights even of a lone dis- senter,” stated the Sin reporter in explaining that the Woo woman “is not so sure” about that. Gimme a break. She has no time at all for anyone who believes tliat homosex- uality has become a menace, that the immigration system is a destructive fiasco, and that affirmative action dis- criminates against whites. Crack down on the bas- tards who question such things. That’s the motto of the coercive Utopians. The human rights mess began with Kathleen Ruff in Dave Barrett’s government 25 years ago. I watched it develop. And now we have the Inquisition organized by the Clarks, the Dosanjhes and the Woos ratching up the rack, determined to “purify” us until we cry “uncle.” Among other things, Clark & Co. pass laws that let them spend millions of taxpayers” dollars advertising their wares during elections while denying others the right to spend more than 090. Result? A fine of $220,000 for the defiant 8.C. Fisheries Survival Coalition, plus an attorney general who suddeily dis- covers that what he has done may be unconstitu- tional. So he puts the fines on hold in order to find out what the courts say. What a twerp. Isn't the province’s top Jaw officer supposed to know what is unconstitutional? The media display silly- boy grins, too. There has been no editorial criticism of the Woo phenomenon in the dailies. And nothing on TV. A five-column headline on the turnover page to the Sun story read: “Human rights head had early interest in fairness.” Really? We were informed, too, that she has an “casy, self- assured smile.” So did Staiin. Her oppo- nents, on the other hand, are “quirky, eccentric, and often unlikeable,” it was reported. I deny it. I am splendidly likeable. ‘Especially after two gin and tonics. According to the article, Woo “is the nightmare of every WASP conservative who still rues the day women got the vote.” Do you know any “WASP conservatives” who rue the day women got the vote? T rest my case. For now. — The North Shore News believes strongly in freedom of speech and the right of all sides in a debate to be heard. The columnists published in the News present differing points of view, but those views are not necessarily those of the newspaper itself.
