A replica of Versailles splendor in North Vancouver? Mirrored halls and crystal chandeliers in that contempo- rary enclave of sedate living? Let me reassure you — Garner’s home has no mir- rored halls. It carries no resemblance to the Palace of Versailles, except for one char- acteristic detail tirat his furni- ture shares with that of the Louis XIV’s style. The decorative elernents in Garner's furniture, the colors and patterns, are not painted on. They are not applied to the sur- face as they often arc in today’s world of fast production. The color, texture and pat- terns in the tables and chairs, coffee tables, garnes tables and buffets are created by mar- quetry, just as they were at the French courts Louis XIV, XV and XVI, and in England by the cabinet makers Robert Adam and Thomas Sheraton. Garner has made a hobby and a small business of pro- ducing fine furniture, in the tradition of the old marqueters and cbenistes who were appointed to the king’s court. He started out as a carpenter and builder, but was evencually able to devote more time to the work that fascinates him. . Today his home is filled with finely crafted furninure i SONY KV.32V35 432" Trinitron o2-Tune? Marquetry is a flush pat- tern created by cutting and fit- ting together veneers of differ- ent woods in contrasting col- ors. The pattern can be as elaborate and detailed as a bouquet of flowers, or it can be geometrical with straight lines. Depending on how the lines and wood grain are fitted together, they can create a chessboard pattern or an opti- cal illusion of depth. The woods used in mar- quetry are colorful and some- times exotic, available in sheets that are little thicker than paper. In the “olden days,” when neither time nor the preservation of natural resources were a concern, thin layers of tortoise-shell, ivory, ebony, mother-of-pearl and metals were often added to exotic woods to give the fin- ished piece of furniture the luster and appearance of pre- cious jewelry. Finished patterns might show buildings, courtyards and street scenes or portraits. Trompe Uoeil or ‘fool the eye’ effects were very popular in the 15th century, depicting for instance the contents of'a cabi- net on the flat panel of the door. - Gaol ee, ® “SONY SLV-660-HF} Trllogic HIFIVCR ¢ © VHS HI-Fi Stereo * Multi-Brand Remote’ Commander® : © Digital Auto Tracking * Auto Head Cleaner $399 «Power Plus Advantage © 2.5" LCO Screen for playback monitor andiairge viewfinder + Built-in speaker for instant playback with sound © 12x Opiical Zoom. Today’s veneers and finishes are less exotic, but even such familiar woods as ash, birch, - elm, chestnut, walnut, oak, mahogany and maple can have an astonishing variety in color, texture and grain. Add to this variety produced by different ways of cutting a log, and the burrs, butts and curls from dif- ferent parts of a log, and plain solid wood furniture can take on a downright boring look. It takes surprisingly few tools to create marquetry. Garner’s main equipment con- sists of a small X-acto knife . with a very fine and very sharp blade, a scraper which is a small and flexible rectangle of steel used instead of sandpa- per, and glue. - There are other require- ments, however, that go into cutting and fitting the wood with flawless precision: 2 = steady hand, a good eye and - infinite patience. The desired - pattern is traced on to the : veneer, cut out piece by piece. and placed on an adhesive sur- face. Since all the pieces have to fit together without gaps or overlaps, there is no room for error. A slip of the knife, and” the piece has to be cut again.
