INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S Day tomorrow will be celebrated on the North Shore with an open house at the North Shore Women’s Centre, along with 23 lectures and pres- entations about women to be held at Capilano College. And it’s important to keep that up and remember the strug- gles that women have gone through and are still going through,’ said Noga Gayle, who is associated with the college's women’s program. Capilano College, in coopera- tion with its women’s studies pro- gram, will hold free lectures and presentations from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Lecture topics include: @ women and the labor move- ment in B.C,; ® the politics of women’s clothing; @ and women. The Mary Catherine Paterson Memorial lecture will be presented by Dr. Margaret Fulton this year. It is entitled Women Restricted by Structure — Breaking out!. The lecture is scheduled to begin at 7:30p.m. - Fulton has received the Order of Canada and is a women’s movement activist. She was one of the driv- ing forces behind the establish- ment of the North Shore's Emily Murphy House, a transition house for abused women, Meanwhile, the North Shore Women's Centre, located at 103 — $45 West 15th St., will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m, tomorrow with a guest appearance scheduled for the Raging Grannies at 12:30 p.m. The women’s centre is a drop- in information and referral centre that was started in the mid ’70s. The centre’s coordinator, Jen- Beth Fulton, said 500 women use the facility each year. “*We cover the whole spectrum “of women’s needs from legal aid to drop-in for social needs where someone just needs to be with other people,'’ said Fulton. “And we let people know about female doctors, female psychiatrists and various support groups,’’ she said. The centre is funded by the three North Shore municipalities and the federal secretary of state under special programs, and has also received some funds from the provincial government. The centre has a feminist library of approximately 200 books.
