must take a lot of credit. His
smooth and careful attention to

character relationships allows the ’

nuances of a spare yet poetic
script to shine through,
The use of limited space on the

set is imaginative and reinforces
the concept of people who live’in
each other's pocket and yet can-
not communicate. But | wondered
if Gar’s dead mother could not
have been more successfully
evoked.

The costumes, toe, work well.

that is not so much draiy as
unimaginative.

McIntosh uses the solo voice of
singer Mike Holborn to frame
each of the three acts. The con- ©
vention is over-used — undercut-
ting and diminishing acting :
achievements at one point — but
Holborn’s poignant voice captures
perfectly the bittersweet treat that
is Philadelphia, Here | Come!
