Teahouse considered for foot of 19th St. ST VANCOUVER Disttice has called for bids to run a proposed teahouse at the foot of 19th Street in the municipality. By Maureen Curtis Contributing Writer West Vancouver District Coun- cil has yet to approve the teahouse operation. But it decidzd Monday night that soliciting proposals would help determine the econom- ic viability of the teahouse, which would be run out of the water- front ‘‘cottage”’ purchased by the municipality from the Wells fami- ly last year. Tne miunicipality’s vision for the 1930s house is a ‘‘walk by, walk in’? type operation rather than one accessed by automcbile. The teahouse would primarily be patronized by seawalk users. Ald. Andy Danyliu said the teahouse idea was a good one, but he said he was concerned about introducing a commercial venture along the waterfront. “{'m also ccncerned about making the decision without public inpui,”’ said Danyliu. West Vancouver Mayor Mark Sager said the property at 119 19h St. had been purchased when it seemed possible that someone was going to buy it and replace it with a new ‘‘monstcr’’ house. “We were concerned about the cost (over $700,000) and felt that we could only buv it if (the prop- erty) could repay some of it through some kind of usage. From the very beginning we have linked the purchase of the Wells house with a tea or coffee house,"’ said Ald. Rod Day. Sager said the property is not WEST VANCOUVER DISTRICT COUNCIL considered part of the waterfront area that the municipality has been buying up between 13th and 18th streets for public park use. The teahouse idea was discussed as part of the Waterfront Direc- tions Study and received quite a bit of support. “Going to tender is not going to commit us to the proposal. It’s a way ot ¢termining if it’s finan- cially viable,’’ said Ald. Ron Wood. é T’ve got the key to your future! § D.
