BUSINESS BRIEFS JOB MARKET YEAR-END cutbacks are ex- pected to out-pace hiring activity in the Vancouver area, according to results of the 1991 fourth quarter Employment Outlook Survey released by Manpower Temporary Services. “With recovery from the reces- sion remaining sluggish and the winter months approaching, employers’ projections are diminishing, as 14% of those in- terviewed indicate they will in- crease staff size but 29% expect to trim personnel levels during Oc- tober, November and December,’’ said Don Cormack, general man- ager of Manpower’s Vancouver office. He added that 52% of the those surveyed expect no changes in hir- ing levels while 5% are uncertain about upcoming staffing needs.”’ More optimisim was indicated in the survey results of three months ago when 31% of those surveyed said they would be hiring while 20% planned reductions. Late fall and early winter op- portunities are most likely in min- ing, construction and public ad- ministration. Cutbacks can be ex- pected in durable goods manufac- turing, wholesale and retail trade, finance, insurance and real estate and services and transportation. Nationally, the recession employment conditions reflected earlier in the year are even more evident. In seven of 10 industry categories, the number of com- panies reducing employment is greater than those increasing. Overal!, only 16% plan staff additions during the year end quarter while 18% anticipate lower employment levels. Another 62% expect no changes and 4% are uncertain about upcoming employment needs. = 4 WENDY ROSS of the North Shore Caregivers Support Society some of the items available in the group’s new resource library.
