Police reports show most intersection accidents are caused by motorists who tailgate, don't yield the right of way, drive too quickly or who simply don’t pay attention to their driving. North Vancouver City worst municipality for intersection accidents PLUS 1991 INTEGRA MODELS NOW IN STOCK “Absolutely North America’s Best Automotive Buy”’ tersections ... and for some the ‘‘impressions’’ made are deadly. That’s why ICBC, community groups and the police are going to focus on intersection safety for a two-week period starting Monday. We had over 33,500 casualty accidents (those involving injuries or fatalities) last year in B.C. Over 45 per cent of them occurred at intersections, more than at any other location on the road. Most happened in urban business and shopping areas during the after- noon rush period. Of the 41] casualty accidents last year in the City of North Vancouver, 64.7 per cent occurred at intersections — the highest rate in the province. The rate for the District, which recorded 481 mis- haps, was 46.6 per cent. As with other types of motor vehicle accidents, the vast majori- ty of collisions at intersections result from errors we commit, and thus can be avoided. If you were to check the police blotter, you’d find that most peo- ple charged after one of these ac- cidents simply weren’t paying at- tention to their driving. Others were following too closely, driving too quickly or not properly yield- ing the right of way to other vehi- cles. When you think about the ac- tion taking place at an average a Hardie INSURANCE CORPORATION OF BRITISH COLUMBIA AUTOTOPIC busy intersecticn, it’s not hard to see why these mistakes can lead to trouble. Even at posted speeds, you can get across in about a second and a half. If you’re really concentrating on your driving you'll need to check for: traffic signals, left and right turning vehicles, any cross traffic including drivers running the light, people changing lanes to get around a left turning vehicle, and pedestrians who, the moment they get out of their own cars, forget about the time and distance a driver needs to stop a vehicle. That’s a lot to handle in a mat- ter of seconds. The goal of ICBC traffic safety personnel and community traffic safety committees is to raise awareness of the problems and get us all thinking about solutions. Of ali the people we are likely to meet at problem intersections over the next few weeks, the police will be particularly interested to see if the message is getting through. LIVING DANGEROUSLY?
