The most obvious reason people
fall asleep at the wheel is that they
simply don’t get enough rest. The
many diversions and demands of
everyday life prompt people to
cut their nights short. This chronic
“‘sleep debt’? combined with the
motion of driving, which can be
highly sleep-inducing and hypnotic
at the best of times, acts as an in-
ternal sleeping pili. Shift workers
with their disrupted sleep patterns
are particularly vulnerable.
