MAILBox Reader says women priests like ‘female bridegrooms’ Dear Editor: Please allow me to correct the false statement, ‘‘Today, women cannot be ordained in the Roman Catholic Church because, accord- ing to the Pope, they are not created in the image of Jesus Christ,” which appears in the column Spiritually Speaking in the May 13 News. The constant teaching of the Catholic Church has been that all human beings are created in the image and likeness of God, in ac- cordance with scriptural reveia- tion. (Gen, 1:27) In Pope John Paul II’s letter On the Dignity and Vocation of Women, he states, ‘‘In calling on- ly men as his apostles, Christ acted in a completely free and sovereign manner. **In doing so, he exercised the same freedom with which, in all his behavior, he emphasized the dignity and the vocation of women, without conforming to the prevailing customs and to the traditions sanctioned by the legis- lation of the time. **Consequently, the assumption that he called men to be apostles in order to conform with the widespread mentality of his times, does not at all correspond to Christ's way of acting.” Therefore, the most compelling reason for the male priesthood is the fact that Christ called only men to be the first priests. We must also remember that the priest is the symbol of Christ, who offers himself on the altar at Be patient with elderiy Dear Editor: Forty-five years have passed, oh so quickly. | remember the sirens going off, the nine o’clock gun, the fireworks and all the horns in the inlet. No more blackouts! Yes, at Jast it was VE day and I knew my husband would be com- ing home. I not only cried tears of joy but tears of sorrow for those who would not be coming home. Our generation is gradually dimizishing in number in the aftermath of the First World War, then the Great Depression and on to the Second World War. But we have left a legacy for our children by trying to make a better world for them. All we ask is they have a little patience with us, be it in a crosswalk or in the slow lane traf- fic. We have earned the right to en- joy the years we have left. We are survivors.
