West Vancouver
resicent elected to
Liberal Party post

CALGARY — Although: the ma-
jority of the 30 North Shore dele-
gates to the June 20 to 23 Liberal
leadership convention in Calgary
were solid Chretien supporters,
helping to give the new Liberal
leader his decisive first ballot win,
there was no unanimity when it
came to the other crucial conven-
tion votes.

After Jean Chretien’s victory
speech Saturday the attention of
delegates and the national media
shifted to the important battles
for party offices.

In a surprise move Friday, a se-
cond Capilano-Howe Sound dele-
gate entered the race for vice-
president of the national party.

West Vancouver lawyer Scott
Stewart challenged long-time Lib-
eral Bill McEwen, another West
Vancouver resident and the only
declared B.C. candidate going into
the convention, for the senior job.

Stewart entered the race after
delegates voted to expand the
number of vice-presidents by six,
one for each of B.C., the Prairies,
Ontario, the North, Quebec and
the Maritimes.

But when ballots were counted
late Saturday night McEwen
emerged victorious, despite
Stewart’s long record of service to
the party and strong support from
the Chretien machine.

Many other members of the
Capilano and North Vancouver
ridings were involved in the debate
over universal suffrage.

The decision by the Liberals to
have future leaders elected by
direct vote of all party members
was supported by an overwhelm-
ing majority of delegates.
