LGH should wash, not whine

Dear Editor:

Your lead story of Jan. 4 about Lions Gate Hospi-
tal’s inability to burn its bio-hazardous waste is mak-
ing me burn.

Surely someone on the hospital board has the
smarts to realize that their increased use of disposable
products is the crux of their problem and that return-
ing to the use of re-useable products would alleviate
it.

If they now have so many disposable hypodermic
needles to get rid of that it’s become a problem,
maybe they should consider going back to the old-
fashioned glass ones that can be re-used. If they now
find themselves up to their ears in dirty paper

washable, :terilizable, re-usable cottons?

The hosital board seems to see a decrease in jobs
and an abdication of community responsibility as
somehow indicitive of an increase in efficiency. I
don’t.

Re-use means jobs for this community, and there
are large, adequate federal and provincial grants
available to the hospital for any job creation pro-
grams they might envisage.

I, for one, would prefer to contribute my taxes
towards a reduction of the problem rather than to
help make it easier for them to perpetuate it. If the
members of the board want my advice, and even if
they don’t, it’s this. Stop whining and start washing.
