SCHOOL ENROLMENT UP

Simon Fraser to continue
French immersion program

SIMON FRASER is the first uni-
versity in B.C. to offer university
courses in French outside of Jan-
guage or education departments.

“There is increasing interest in
French immersion classes in high
schools throughout the province,’’
says Dr. Rowland Lorimer, chair-
man of Canadian Studies. ‘‘This is
to be a logical extension.”

Dr. Walter Wattamaniuk, direc-
tor Of Simon Fraser’s analytical
studies, says projections show
within five years as many as 1,000
B.C. high school students may
graduate each year from French
immersion and Cadre Francais
programs.

Simon Fraser will offer two
lower level courses each semester
for the next three semesters,
evaluating the program at the end
of a year.

Lorimer says B.C. is the only
province in Canada which does not
offer university level courses in
both official languages.

“Universities in other provinces
have accommodated French-speak-
ing students by declaring one sec-
tion of a university to be a fran-
cophone college.

“It makes good sense for Simon
Fraser to do that for British Col-
umbia students,’’ Lorimer says.

“The highest rate of growth in
French Immersion classes is Simon
Fraser’s primary recruitment
area.”’

The program is not limited to
French-immersion graduates, but
is open to any student who feels
confident about studying in
French.

Lorimer says there are several
reasons for offering courses in
French.

“The first is that it doesn’t make
a lot of sense to educate a student
in French and then have nowhere

for that student to go after com-
pleting nigh school.

‘Statistics show immersion stu-
dents tend to be better students, so
it is not unreasonable to expect
that a fair percentage of them will
want to continue their education.
By continuing their studies in
French, they will continu: to im-
prove their levels of fluency.”

Lorimer says tutors will be
available to work with students
and classes will be small enough
that separate tutorial groups will
not be required.
