Doug Collins @ get this straight e IN DAYS of yore you never had any trouble writing to your MP, post-free. But now inere’s no guarantee that such mail will go through. More and more, Canada Post is being inhabited by immigrant Chinese who, even though they are very clever, do not seem to understand our quaint Anglo-Saxon customs. The outraged Mr. John Bell of West Vancouver found out about that, On August 19 he sent a letter to Mary Collins, the people's tribune for Capilano. It was returned to him on September 3 with a large Canada Post sticker on it telling him he had failed to put 2 34-cent: stamp oon the envelope. Mr. Bell spoke to the West Van post office supervisor about this breach of his rights. He is Mr.Dan Leong, a gent of Chinese extrac- tion, as they say these days. According to Mr. Bell's written complaint to the big post office in Vancouver, the supervisor in- formed him, ‘tin almost unintelligible English’: ‘You write member of parlia- ment on envelope and put stamp. No stamp no go. | do not know what MP means. Means nothing.” Mr. Bell did not take kindly to this reaction. ‘‘Such manifest ig- norance is alarming,’’ he told the Canada Post biggies. ‘‘Further, the attitude of Mr. Leong was.,.unhelpful."’ (The three dots stand for other, somewhat stronger words.) Mr Bell reports that after “some frustrating discussion," Leong agreed to hand-stamp the letter to Collins. To make suve she knew about tue incident, he hand- delivered a comptaint to her, This situation, he said, was appalling. The West Van resident having sent me copies of — the cor- respondence in this imeresting at- fair, | phoned Mr Leong myself. Using my sweetest voice, f asked him: “May DT send a letter to my MP without putting a stamp on it?" No doubt someone had been talking to him about such matters, because in heavily-accented English he said 1 didn't need a stamp, bur that | should write out the words “Member of Parlia- ment’ behind the name. In full. “That way, post office notice it.” He added helpfully chat | couldn’t send parcels to my MP that way. Well, not to worry. My MP won't get any pareels from me, stamped or unstamped, Not even at Xmas. Mr. Bell has had no reply from Collins (Mary) or the big post of- fice in Vancouver. But he did get an abusive phone call from so- meone claiming to be a West Van post office person. P.S. Do f smell affirmative ac- tion in action here? wk ok ok Mr. Bell's little contest shows that not all Canadians have capitulated to the ways of PUBLIC DEMONSTRATIONS Fire departments | heat up for prevention week PROMOTIONS for Fire Preven- tion Week, Oct. 6-12, are beginn- ing early on the North Shore. Another chap who hast surrendered yet is a promi- nent Toronto travel agent, James McCready of Argosy Travel. Mr. MeCready was the con- spirator who placed that in- teresting advertisement in the Globe & Mail coucerming a ‘tact- finding tour’? of South Africa. When the ad appeared, Silly Joe (Clark) threw a tantrum. Such advertising contravened the Tories’ ban on boosting travel to that beleaguered land. he yelled. The busy fellow then told the South African Tourism Board and South African Airways to shut up shop, even though he had no legal right to do se. Last’ week, the travel agent placed another ad in the Globe. “Take a fact-finding tour in South Africa,’ if read, just like the first one. ‘See the situation for yourself, ete... Silly Joe must believe that Canada is some kind of banana republic replete with peasants eager to touch their forelocks as he rides by in his carriage, because an External Affairs man called John Groves got on the blower to McCready, demanding that the travel agent cease and desist. “When Joe gets back to Ot- tawa,"’ retorted McCready, ‘‘tell him to call me and I'll tell him to stick itin his ear. You can also tell him Um stepping up my advertis- ing campaign.’* Attaboy, Jim! Give ‘em cold steel! With a few more like you, Wimpland may become Canada again.
