Canada in 1986 with either a
built-in broadcast stereo sound
system or with provision for an
optionai stereo decoder and audio
system, Croner noted. ‘‘Last year,
the industry sold only half that
number with stereo capability.”

The addition of stereo sound to
television began in mid-1984 after
a single technical standard was
adopted in the U.S. by broad-
casters and TV receiver manufac-
turers.

Stereo sound is becoming an
important factor in other video
products, particularly video
cassette recorders.

ENHANCED SALES

“The introduction of stereo
sound to video products resulted in
an enhanced category of video
products that generated retail sales
of more than $2.5 billion in 1985,’’
Croner said in reference to the
United States market.

A matching growth area in con-
sumer electronics is the rise of
audio/video systems in the home.

Tracing the growing sales in the
United States of color TV receivers
with stereo capability, Croner
noted that industry sales in 1984
amounted to less than 500,000
units.

The following year, industry
sales climbed to 4.5 million stereo
capable receivers.
