Buyers out to beat
1:13.9 million odds

SOME ARE buying in groups, while others have
decided to go solo, but the intent of this week’s
ticket-buying exercise is all the same: to cash in on
Saturday’s multi-million dollar Lotto 6/49 draw.

The odds are stacked
against even the most op-
timistic of buyers at an
estimated one in 13.9 mil-
lion, but that hasn’t daunted
hordes of people from
flooding local Loto outlets.
And as a result, the high
demand for tickets for the
estimated $10.8 jackpot have
forced several Lotto 6/49
vendors to put up with
machines overloaded with
ticket requests.

Woodwards, Park Royal,
was the site of one long
lineup when the North Shore
News went in search of
potential millionaires Wed-
nesday.

Genevieve said she only
buys Lotto 6/49 tickets
“when there’s a big
jackpot.’’ She said this
week’s ticket was being fi-
nanced by the $10 she won
in another draw last week,
but admitted she thought her
chances of winning the
jackpot were slim.

Elaine said she spends
about $20 a month on lot-
tery tickets, but only accu-
rately chooses one or two of
the numbers in Lotto 5/49.

“ve won $50 on the
Provincial or that sort of
thing but never in the Lotto
6/49,"" said Elaine. ‘“‘{ think
my chances are the same as
someone else’s, but I don’t
want to really win the big
one, I'd like to win maybe a
couple of hundred thousand,
that would be nice.”’

Riley admits to buying
tickets ‘fairly regularly,”
but says he does not use a
particular system for the
numbers. he chooses: ‘*!
usually run the same ones
through, trough.”* His plans
for the money, should he
win the jackpot? ‘Pil wait
‘al T get it before I make
any plans.”

Roz says she chooses her

numbers by ‘“‘sheer instinct,
by sheer feeling’? and once
was actually only one
number out in a Lotto 6/49
draw.

feel lucky. The jackpot has
inspired me a litte bit, 1
guess, to keep trying.”
