That's not a good situation for our municipality . The District firemen voted 2 to 1 against a proposed new collective negotiated by the represen- tatives of 11 suburban locals of their union. The majority in the Lower Mainland voted Pro-c Dear Editor: As president of the North Shore Women's Centre, | appreciate the coverage given the Centre, outhning the years activities in a recent edition of your paper. However, I would lke to clarify one issue -mentioned in the article with regard to the hospital election of 1980 where it stated “pro-abortion forces (won) over = anti- abortionists.” lt is an error to line up the two forces on the abortion issue aS pro and = anti- abortion. Pro-choice and an- trchoice is” the precise definition of the two sides fighting to win hospital board elections throughout _ this province. Those of us who advocate pro-choice on abortion may not all believe in abortion as a moral choice for ourselves. bul we all defend the nght of a woman to choose what 15 Mens Gold Rings agreement — pice IS for it, however, so they're stuck with n. What they're disturbed about is the fact that no definite wage in- crease has been negotiated, with the provision that, if the two parties cannot reach agreement, then the whole: matter will be settled by bin- ding arbitration. =~ What “bugs” many of our firemen are two things. The first is that the GVRD., if it believes it can get a better deal with binding arbitration, won't negotiate in good faith. Personally, morally right for hersell. Those of us who are pro- choice on abortion are very much pro-life - we believe that a woman’s life is very bmportant and that all children should be wanted ones. If the right to choose a medically safe. hospital abor- tion is taken away, there will still be many desperate women out there who will make that choice - a backroom. medically unsafe and dangerous procedure. Take a walk. kno the record of the GVR Labour Relations Committee, which takes its directions from the Em- ployers’ Council of B.C., I believe our firemen have good reason to be suspicious. The second is that many firemen feel-angry at the lack of understanding of their needs, by our North Van- couver District Council and the way council washes its hands of all responsibility for negotiations and _ leaves everything to the GVRD.
