Capilano College will be holding a special workshop for hor- ticulturalists, gardeners, and plant enthusiasts on Choosing Trees and Shrubs for Your Garden this month, while there's still time to consider what the garden will look like in the spring. The workshop, which will be held Sunday, October 19 and 26, will provide par- ticipants with a working knowledge of common and proper names, features and uses of trees, shrubs and ground covers that are the most suitable for lower mainland residential gar- dens. Instructor Christine Sharman is a_ Landscape Architect) and BCIT in structor who has a degree in Botany from London University. She will be emphasizing how to choose plants to achieve not only maximum seasonal beauty and vanation but minimum maintenance and increased property value. Choosing Trees and Shrubs for Your Garden will be held from 9:30 to 4:30 both Sundays and registration is limited. The fee for the workshop is $30 per person or $50 for two registrants together. Level I is designed to introduce participants to the basics of kayaking — in- structing in theory, equipment and paddling skills in the comfort and safety of the indoor pool. In Level I] these basics are perfected and the class is introduced to open-water kayaking on the ocean and local rivers. The caption to a picture in the October 12 Sunday News stated that the children’s book “Timmy the West Coast Tug” by Jeremy Moray had been banned by Van- couver Public Library because it was allegedly «a < ity Sexist . The News has since learned that the book has not been banned by the Van- couver hbrary, which has two copies and more on order. Certain aspects of the slory, however. are reported to be regarded as “con now open troversial” by education authorities who had been asked to adopt it as a curriculum textbook.
