A7-Sunday News, November 23, 1980 sailbox —___ ———— , : . Parents fo Dear Editor: This is in response to your editorial of Wednesday, November 12th, entitled “The French Facts”: 1. WEST VANCOUVER PARENTS FOR FRENCH is currently attempting § to determine the number of famihes in West Van who would be interested in a Secondary Immersion program for their children. This program is not designed to run “throughout = the school system up to grade 12” as stated in the Editorial, but is a HIGH SCHOOL program only. 2. “ALL subjects” will NOT be taught in French. In grades 8 and 9, students will take many, but not all, subjects in French and this will decrcase to ap- proximately 40% of their mstruction tame in sub sequent grades. 3. Contrary to “the practical advantages” of becoming bilingual being there are substantial educational and personal advantages to becoming bilingual. Documented studies on Secondary Im- mersion have showa that students graduating from these programs are well armed for the job market both in Canada and abroad. At present, studenis are “pursuing their careers almost exclusively in English-speaking Canada” not by choice but BECAUSE they) are unihngual and, _ therefore, have no alternative. “obscure”, 4. Regarding effect on the other subjects”, there 1s now a great deal of research evidence which demon- Strates that children who have been enrolled in similar programs elsewhere in Canada have suffered no loss in their achievement i English or any other school subject. In addition, they “the possible teaching of have gained a high level of proficiency in French and a far higher level than is possible to attain in the type of “French as a_ second language” program currently available in B.C. high schools. 5. In reference to the Editor's concern about the cost of this program, we can realistically expect one grade 8 class for the first school year which will require the hiring of one teacher. As the Federal Government provides “start- up” grants to initiate these programs, West Vancouver's Secondary French Im- mersion can be introduced at far less than the cost of traditional programming. 6. lt is understandable that because of the political tone that French/English relations have in this country, tt might be wrongly assumed that CANADIAN PARENTS FOR FRENCH is Taylor thanks voters Dear Editor: I'd hke to take this op portunity, uf I may. to comment on last Saturday's municipal election.
