The Wolf's: were delighted and even more so when their guest proceeded to teach them the fine points of the art of dowsing. Herman Wolf was actually more amazed than delighted because his friend and guest was none other than .the ‘celebrated scientist Albert Einstéin. While lesser people . scoffed, not only did this brilliant man. not ridicule dowsing, he actually practised the art himself! Dowsing is one those mysterious subjects that logically -shouldn’t.work but does. Born near St. Ives, Cornwall in 1883, Evelyn soon found: she had the divining gift (which both her father and grandmother had) and even as a girl was able to locate water and minerals with ease. After -her--parents--died, — Miss Penrose came to America in 1929 to visit an - aunt. in Sacramento, California; and was soon. putting her divining rodtouse. _ She had never had the opportunity to dowse for oil before and, being anxious to try, visited the oil fields. It wasn’t long before she realized that dowsing for water and dowsing for oil different. techniques — the oil dowsing made her ill with. headaches and _ violent nausea. After spending some time in California and Hawaii, Evelyn Penrose moved north to Canada, going to British Columbia where a seven year drought was creating . havoc. In desperation the provincial government there hired her as its official water- diviner. They were not disappointed with , the results. Working herself and her team almost to exhaustion, the dedicated woman travelled” ‘to. hundreds | of. scattered: homesteads and orchards, eventually © dowsing for 392, water locations! In 1913, at the Second ~Congress “of Experimental” Psychology in Paris, some 200 scientists . and professional people ap- pointed a divining. Their attempt at open-mindedness received a jolt when a M. Mathieu informed the committee that it wasn't necessary for a dowser to walk over the location ground to obtain results — he claimed that water and other subterranean materials could be located by merely divining over a map of the area. ae Working on a map of a plot of land owned by a committee member, Mathieu successfully marked the map with all the locations of water — surface and underground — which were in that area. A‘ second and more difficult’ test was also passed with flying colors by the gifted Frenchman. Evelyn Penrose later read of these astonishing demonstrations and naturally wished to duplicate them. Evelyn certainly reacted to the sensations produced by different minerals — silver and radium made her fingers feel as if they had been pricked or burned while oil made her feel as though she were in a fog and ’ dirty. Perhaps, in view of the present oil and energy shortage, we should gather all the talented dowsers together, set them up with large scale maps of the entire continent and let them get to work with ‘plumb-bobs.
