Terry Halak, a graduate of of the University of Alberta and a coach of Becky: Smith and Kathy DeGroot of the - National Swim Team, will assist Dave Johnson of Edmonton’s -—Keyana Swim Club. ” Jim Perez, a graduate of Simon Fraser University and former coach of swim teams in both California and British Columbia, en retained to work with Bill Rose of the Canadian Dolphin Swim Club in Vancouver. Trevor Tiffany, head coach of the Manchester (England) services, department joins Deryk Snelling at the Etobicoke Swim Club in Torento. “The quality of these-three assistant coaches 1s out- - Standing,” Douglas Fraser, CASA executive’ director, said. “Under normal cir- cumstances, these men would be working as head coaches rather than as assistants. Because of the Imperial Oil grant, however, -we can afford to retain these exceptional individuals to give our organization the sort of coaching depth that is -required at the world level of competition. | “In the past, whenever it was necessary, to send our head -coaches to major international meets, the developing swimmers at home were left without first- . class coaches. That will not be the case in the future. In addition, it will be possible for each club to provide personalized | coaching supervision to a greater number of s swimmers. The addition of the assistant coaches is part of the CASA's expanded ac- tivities, which are being funded by Imperial Oil. In addition to these ap- pointments, a fourth assistant coach remains to be named. Other Imperial Oil funds are being used to send Canada's most promising young swimmers to top- flight international com- petitions and to subsidize the travel costs for athlictes competing in the annual Winter Nationals swimming championships. This year’s Winter Nationals are being held in Winnipeg, March 29 to April 1, 1979. During the next three years, Imperial Oil will donate up to $200,000 a year to the swim association.
