all know: that hockey sticks aren’t used exclusively for slapping pucks. How many Canadian men go past knife drawers and grab hockey sticks when they hear suspicious noises in . houses ‘at night?. How many pesky raccoons have been slap shot off a deck with the same trusty weapon? Severa! years ago in the Delbrook - area, a resident used a hockey stick to -. smash the back window of a stolen vehicle taking off out of his driveway. Two career criminals,‘one on federal ~ parole, the other infamous for being . shot: by’ a cop, had just broken into. ~ the man’s home. They took off quick- . oly with the stick-swinging homeown- er in pursuit. So what was all the fuss last’: Friday when -NHLer Marty” Bi ‘McSorley got sentenced for. using his . hockey stick as a : Weapon? The former === WIiEW POINT—— Boston Bruin got off lightly for whacking Canucks’ Donald Brashear into unconsciousness on Feb. 2], - Brashear received 2 serious concus- sion and couldn’t play for seven weeks. For all this intentional hurt, McSorley received 18 months’ proba- tion. He will have no permanent criminal record if he doesn’t breach court orders. What McSorley did by any criminal definition was assault with a weapon complete with intent to do harm. Just because he was in a hockey uniform during a NHL game does not absolve him of the crime. . NHLers do not skate to different criminal rules. Unfortunately, the judge’s tepid sentence doesn’t rein- force that message. It is doubtful the sentence will deter another hockey ape from taking another outrageous — cheap shot.
