In the Flames’ 3-2 foss to the Pilots at Mission, all the scoring in the game was confined to the first period. But one of the bright lights of the night for the Flames was the work of newcomer Mario Abella, who accounted for both North Shore goals. After the Plots opened the scor- ing at the $:52 mark, Abella tied it at l-] midway through the period with Dave Port) and Andrew Merilees drawing assists. Two minutes later the two teams traded goals 35 seconds apart: the Pilots taking the lead again at 12:48 and the Flames’ Abella teplying with his second goal — again from Port and Merilees — at 13:23 to knot the score al two apiece. Mission closed out the scoring, producing the winner with just 13 seconds remaining in that opening period. Goalie Mike Paima, who came up with a hot performance in the Flames’ losing cause, made 40 saves on the night, including one on a penalty shot with just under two minutes remaining in the game. At home at the Winter Club Jan. 30 and backstopped by the superb goaltending of Gary Knight, the Flames posted their se- cond shutout victory of the year, turning back the Northwest Americans 5-0 in an aggressive, hard-hitting contest. The Flames’ only goal of the first period came at the 17:01 mark with Kevin Buhr scoring what would prove to be the game winner from John-Cox and Sean Mor- rison. But the game’s turning point came midway through the second period when a Seattle forward took exception “to simultaneous checks by Cox and Scott Higgin- son and was banished from the game; a five-minute major penalty power-play opportunity was awarded to the Flames. The North Shore team respond- ed with three power-play goals ina 34-minute span to account for the only scoring of the period and a’ 4-0 lead after two. Power-play marksmen for the Flames were Port from Ken Savage and Wade Bartok at 12:07, Justine George from Savage and Steve Harris at 13:43, and Jeff Lee from Bryan Markert and Savage at 15:47. Late in the period, the Fhimes concluded the scoring on a goal by Buhr from Cox and Higginson at 16:51 for the 5-0 final. Over the three periods the Flames outshot the Americans 29-25, The Flames conclude regular league play before the start of playoffs with back-to-back games against the Grandview Steelers — at home Feb. 13 and then away Feb. 14.
