The similarities benveen - the two events are striking. ‘The initial waining for both is pleasant, even rapturous. Both take months of gesta- tion. Both may involve loss of bladder control. And both are momentous, unforgettable experiences. Like childbirth, running a tnarathon marks a certain coming of age or maturity as a runner. “Fitness is out, experience is in,” once remarked famous runner/philusopher George Sheehan when asked to explain the marathon boom. The second wave of the running boom shows a sharp increase in the num- ber of marathoners. What began as a pursuit of health has become an experiential quest. As we ran along the road, first one woman, then another, approached running toward us. T knew instantly they were beginners. That was because they were running on the wrong side of the road. Most experienced runners run facing traffic rather than with traffic behind. (It’s safer that way.) Wanting them to feel welcome in their new sport, we gave cach a cheery “Hello!” And the response came back: “Ubhhhhhh...” It was al! they could do to get out a gasped response. Don't go so hard the first day that you're stiff and sore the second. Make it easy on yourself, Walk before you run. Jog uatil you're tired; walk again until you're recavered. Combining jog- ging with walking is a sensi- ble way to start. @ Train sensibly. A lot of people have gone before you. Don't repeat their beginners’ mistakes. Follow a sensible 10K training pro- gram. If possible, seek coaching help, or join a running club. Practise regularly. Go as an observer or enter as 2 participant, youll find that walking or run- ning a 10K can be fun. For many seasoned run- ners who have been cun- ning marathons for a tong time, the LOK seems like a short and painless distance. But, for a beginner, the 10K may seem like a marathon of sorts.
