“alep,” an Indian flute.

The black made-up eyes, full of
anger, stare right through you. A
woman moves slowly away ‘from the
chair and builds into a passionate
intensity typical of Flamenco. You

wouldn’t say she is creating movements
— she is responding to her emotions as
they happen in real time.

“It is a kind of improvisation,” says
dancer Marie Louise Albert. “I know
what Iam going to do. It is structured
in advance. There are many move-
ments that are typicaily choreographed,
but the timing of a lor of it and espe-
cially the hand gestures are mine.”

She is responding to something
which is not very clear in her perfor-
mance. “f£ am not sad, I am not happy.
It is more like anger or confusion.
Taking an intense moment and
expanding on it,” says Albert. “Iam
not sure what is going to happen, but
I have the strength to still do it.”

This year’s FANS award will
be presented during FANS
Nighi, an evening gala on Oct.
16 at Capilano College’s
Performing Arts Theatre.
Organizers don’t know yet
whether the star will be there
to receive his award in person.

“He is a North Shore boy.
We hope he will be there,” said
arts commissioner and FANS
Night co-chair Jane Lowery
when contacted Wednesday.
“Te’s to be announced.”

Argyle Secondary School and
mainzains a home in West
Vancouver, was the awards
committee’s clear winner, con-
firmed Lowery. Seven other
artists received nominations,
but Adamis won the majority of
commissioners’ votes.

This year’s FANS award is
an original sculprare carved
from Italian marble by North
Van artist Michael Binkley.

The musician will be hard
pressed to find room for it on
his mantle. Adams is rhe nold-
er of 15 Juno Awards, a
Grammy and an American
Music Award as well as the
Order of Canada.

Tickets for FANS Night are
$30 per person. ;
