Maley’s un-annual Yo-Yo- A-Go-Go all-ages music fes- tival returns after a one-year hiatus for a July 13-18 run at the Capitol Theatre “in che capital of the Evergreen © State. Maley runs the Yo-Yo record label, hence the festi- val’s name, and uses the the- atre as a recording studio. The festival was inspired by the ironically named International Pop Underground Convention in 1991. ‘That festival used the Capitol and other venues to showcase bands on, or friendly to, K Records, an Olympia independent label run by Maley’s friend Calvin Johnson. The first Yo-Yo-A-Go-Go took place three years later in 1994 and included Beck and “a surprise performance by Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic and Dave Grehl. It was the first time they appeared together on stage after. the . Cobain. ° death - of Kurt ‘Novosclic was ready to jam ~ with a band called the Stinky ‘Puffs, Maley remembers, while Grohl was stancing backstage. “Dave looked at me and * was like ‘Should I ge on?” Maley: said. “‘Yeah, we'll get you a drum set.’ We gvabbed a drum set off the backstage . “and that’s how they. got “together on that show.” This year. (Co-leader) Mark Hosler told me if they man- age to pull off what they’re trying it will be phenomenal, otherwise it will be ridicu- lous. He’s so excited about it. He gave me no clues, but from past Negstivland shows it should be real good. Pretty amazing.” Yo-Yo-A-Go-Go _ coin- cides with Olympia’s annual Lake Fest and includes a Saturday afternoon fashion show and parade. “The week we put it on the town is already in a fren- zy because it has its biggest festival. The theatre’s a neat place to sce shows. For the bands, because it’s a festival and vou're in front of 1,000 or so people, they just really shine, they do their best. Some of the shows you sce are better than any other time you sce them. It’s got- tena good reputation in that regard.” Maley hopes to break- even on the festival, though he anticipates it will have spinoff cffects lasting until the next time he decides te Yo-¥Yo-A-Go-Go. “What it ends up doing is On june 25, over 100 VAN NET Carriers enjoyed an evening, of coaching, prize draws, | mascot ‘Baby Gee promoting our label.
