Az the first sign of major engine trou- ble, thousands of Canadians trade in otherwise roadworthy Cars years too soon. Not only is that a big cost, it’s an environmental problem. More and more car owners are discovering a real alternative. Replacing a worn or mal- functioning engine with a fac- tery remanufactured engine saves thousands of dollars and keeps cas from a date with the scrap heap. A factory remanufactured engine typically costs one third less than the cost of a new engine. And while new engines won't always be available as. replacements in older cars, there should always be a remanufactured one available. While the life of the aver- age engine is 150,000-160,000 kilometres, an engine can be remanufactured. twice, or more. shtly “Ri or wrongly, man: le believe that ye the engine goes, their only course is to ‘another car,” says Stavek Kshonze, customer ser- vice manager at VW Canada Remanufacturing. “They are afraid of becoming hostage to mechanics,” VWC Remanufacturing is At last - 2 truly affordable family Jy | . Ail engines must pass rig- orous electronic inspection, and then get a limited warranty from the vendor, usually one or two years. Also, remanufac- tured engines achieve virtually the same performance and emission standards as new engines. They may even out- perform the engine that went into a car at the assembly plant. That’s because over the pro- duction life span of any engine, there will be fixes and improve- ments incorporated in the design and specifications. One might think automak- ers would rather steer cus- tomers away from remanufac- tured engines, so they buy new cars. Just the opposite. says Kshonze.
